Three of the best from Bordeaux are among the stellar wines we acquired this week: 2003 Lafite, 2000 Bellevue, and 2001 Reiussec. In 2003 Lafite proved that it could tame an extreme vintage with a wine true to the signature poise and elegance of its name. A perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker translates into extreme demand, which is only compounded by production levels at half their norm in this tough vintage.

Bellevue is a new star on the right bank. A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, 2000 was the debut release and it achieved instant acclaim. Made by winemaking “wunderkind” Nicolas Thienpont, of Pavie-Macquin, and consultant Stephen Derencourt (La Mondotte, Canon-La-Gaffeliere, Clos de l'Oratoire) from low-yielding vines, Parker calls this wine a tour de force! At $89, this incredible value is a wine to buy by the case and enjoy over the next ten years.

The sweet wines of Bordeaux reached a peak in 2001. Irresistible now in their nerve-tingling youth, they will richly reward patience over decades. Rieussec was one of three 100-point Sauternes of the vintage, alongside Yquem and Climens. Sauternes just does not get better than this.
